Anshina Verma Blog 11- The Baddest of Bunnies

I stare at the screen, watching as Bad Bunny walks out onto the Super Bowl field. The backup dancers who look like thistles from Tinker Bell trail after him as he walks up onto a vintage white car and begins to drop the most mystical music I’ve heard in a long time.

As my family and I stare transfixed at the TV screen, my dad finds a funny video of the infamous All-American Halftime Show, with lyrics that mostly consisted of “beer,” “girls,” “trucks,” and If I remember correctly, the last one being “dirt.” Safe to say, the show sounded like a horrible version of Footloose

The alternative entertainment featured Kid Rock and other MAGA-aligned country stars who utilized the event to promote their racist ideals. The show was ultimately created to divert attention away from Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, who was called “not an American” despite his hometown being in an American territory.

What really took the cake, however, was President Trump’s take on Bad Bunny’s performance, as he called it “absolutely terrible” and “one of the worst EVER!” emphasizing the dismal quality of Bad Bunny’s appearance at the Super Bowl. What struck the public was Trump’s reference to Bad Bunny as an “affront to the greatness of America,” which, given America’s recent attempt to purchase Greenland, how “great” America is must be questioned. Frankly, Trump’s post on his new platform “Truth Social” was ridiculous, as he claimed “nobody [could] understand a word [Bad Bunny] said” his words, directly undermining the Latin American immigrants present at the show, who not only understood what Bad Bunny said, but actually very much enjoyed it. Trump directly attempted to question how appropriate Bad Bunny’s show was.

The democratic party, in response, claimed that “Kid Rock’s” show was no more appropriate and in fact more inappropriate than Bad Bunny’s. As Kid Rock’s lyrics ranged from sly jabs to rampant references of phedophelia. As the specific line “Little boys ain’t little girls” and similar lines were used in the All-American Halftime Show, so how Bad Bunny’s performance of all things was inappropriate, I suppose I’ll never understand.

  1. Hello Anshina! I remember Trump calling Bad Bunnies performance an "affront to the greatness of America" and also calling it a "slap in the face" to the country. Trump's preference for Kid Rock (who I never heard of until 2 weeks ago) is quite funny. Kid Rock having songs with the lyrics "Young ladies, young ladies, I like 'em underage, see / Some say that's statutory, but I say it's mandatory," is quite alarming as you realize that THIS is the person that our president sees as the representation of the "greatness of America." This really does not help Trump's controversy with the Epstein files.

Bad Bunnies performance also plays a role in combating the "nazification" of our country through ICE. His performance shows that just because you are not white, does not mean you are not American. Thank you for sharing Anshina!

  2. For people like President Trump, there’s a very narrow space for what being “American” means. He’s welcoming of immigrants from “nice” countries (according to a comment made in April of 2024) like Denmark and Norway, but won’t say the same for those from countries like Mexico. The president won’t acknowledge that part of the reason America grew to be such a powerhouse on the world stage is because of immigrants from all over the globe, not just those from a certain region.

A quick Google search tells me that modern football, in fact, was invented in England, not America. Some sources claim that its roots trace back even further, to ancient China or perhaps Greece. Despite that, football is seen as a quintessential American sport; none of this would have been possible without the spread and assimilation of countless cultures into America.
